Abstract:

Opuntia stricta has been widely used in the treatment of inflammation, hyperglycemia, high blood cholesterol, ulceration, neurological problems, burns and asthma. In this context, we decided to evaluate the antimicrobial and anthelmintic property of Opuntia stricta against bacteria, fungi and worms. The aim of the study was to investigate the antimicrobial and anthelmintic activities of plant extracts (aqueous, ethanol) from Opuntia stricta against twelve microorganisms comprising of eight bacteria (Streptomyces fulvissimus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Shigella flexneri ,Escherichiae coli, Bacillus subtilis Streptococcus pyogenes,Pseudomonus aeruginosa ,Proteus mirabilis) and four fungi (Aspergillus niger,Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium chrysogenum) using well diffusion method and anthelmintic activity against worms (Pheretima posthuma). The in vitro study revealed that ethanol extract of Opuntia stricta was more effective than aqueous extract. Ethanol extract of Opuntia stricta was reported to be more effective on fungal, bacterial species and worms.
