Abstract:
Alopecia areata is a common condition characterized by sudden onset of patchy hair loss without signs of skin inflammation or scarring. It usually causes small, coin-sized, round patches of baldness on the scalp, although hair elsewhere such as the beard, eyebrows, eyelashes, body and limbs can be affected. In some people larger areas are affected and occasionally it can involve the whole scalp or even the entire body and scalp. Emotional strains, stresses and nervous disorders Aging, Infections, Hormonal imbalances generally causes of alopecia. Genetic predisposition, autoimmunity, and environmental factors play a major role in the etiopathogenesis of AA. Now days to re-growth the hair and lack of a uniform response to various therapies has made clinical trials in alopecia areata difficult to plan and implement. The present review describes that etiology, diagnosis and therapeutic management of alopecia areata. Treatment of alopecia areata is dependent on age of patient as well as the extent and duration of scalp involvement. Treatments include steroids, topical immunotherapy, topical minoxidil, anthralin, and immunosuppressants.
